byrachel BY RACHEL

Joko ootte hankkinu kaikki joululahjat?

Curious for Sets

KURIOS! Go and see it!

I went yesterday to see Cirque du Soleil's KURIOS, that's running in Vancouver. LOVED IT! The show, tricks, music, set design, story, everything! <3 Anytime I go see these kinds of shows, I get the urge to become a set designer (and a musician and a performer and what not...) The set was absolutely beautiful. It was moving, the show was full of interactive stuff with the set (and the technicians - a shout out to you people!) The importance of a set in any...

Book cover and jacket redesign

I'm baaa-ack...!

The last project at school was to create our own designs for a book. We had a list of a few books to choose from. I chose The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay. The cover has already been designed many times. Here you can see an overall look and feel to them.

I decided to take the comic feel...

Pekingin upeimmat palatsit ja temppelit

Eiksjoo (pikkuseikkoja)

Kiina on matkailukohde, josta riittää ammennettavaa. Valtavan kokoiseen maahan kannattaa palata useamman kerran uudelleen.

Teimme lokakuussa Kiinaan noin kolmen viikon reissun. Reittinä oli Peking–Xi'an–Peking–Qinhuangdao–Tianjin–Peking, ja välimatkat kuljimme junilla. Liikkuminen maassa on nykyään nopeaa, kun useille...

Halloween Pumpkins

Halloween! A very North American thing, which is making its way to Europe. I'm so happy I got to experience the real thing here. With all the decorations, candy (so good) and even PUMPKIN CARVING! And I got to thinking - the designs, the techniques, the imagination you can put into it.

I entered a carving competition at school. Wasn't supposed to, but then thought, I'd just scribble something, just to get the experience and to be able to say, I've tried carving pumpkins. Ended up...

Art Nouveau

Good evening y'all!

Today I had a presentation about Art Nouveau. I'm not going to have the same "presentation" here for you but just to say a few words and share a few thoughts with you.

So obviously I have to start with a little bit of history. Very shortly. Art Nouveau was born in France, in Paris and spread very rapidly from there to Europe and America. The main timeframe for this art was from 1890 to the I World War in 1914. It was a very important movement in art and...

Redesigning a book

Ladataan...

So this blog is for the course I'm taking at KPU called Publication Design. The assignment for last week was to redesign two spreads of a book we didn't find as appealing as it could've been. My book was Holiday Buzz from Cleo Coyle published in 2012. It's about a barista solving a murder around the holiday season.

The old design was a paperback with all these curvy typeface. I was not impressed. While doing the redesign we didn't have to worry about publishing costs or any of that...

Interior Design at its Finest

Ladataan...

There was an interior design show in Vancouver last weekend which I attended. I was giddy. There is a similar show held every September in Finland, which I missed this time for obvious reasons. I was excited to see the Vancouver version and I gotta say, I was surprised how small it was. Even more surprising is that something like this is bigger in Finland than it is in Vancouver.

Anyhow I liked the exhibition. There were a few things that stood out.
