Happy Groundhog Day
Today, February 2nd, is Groundhog day in North America and I have to say it’s one of the wierder traditions that I have ever heard of. So, on groundhog day a groundhog (Metsämurmeli) is woken up from its’ winter hibernation to see whether spring will come early, or whether winter will continue for another six weeks. To determine which it will be, the groundhod is woken up and if it can see its’ own shadow then it pops up out of its hole winter will continue but it it can’t, then spring will come early. So today, three groundhogs were woken up: Shubenacadie Sam from Nova Scotia, Punxsutawney Phil from Pensylvania and the albino hog Wiarton Willie from Ontario. Apparently Sam didn’t see his shadow but Phil did so Willie came in for the tiebreaker and when he didn’t see his shadow either it was broadcast that spring was coming early this year!
