Useless belongings

It’s a weird feeling to go through all your worldly posessions and decide what you will need during the next couple of years. We moved house about three years ago and at the time thought that we only packed the essentials and got rid of everything we didn’t need but as it turns out, our apartment is full of stuff we truely don’t use or even remember we own! Yesterday, for example, I opened a cupboard in our spare room which was full of notes and handouts from university courses I took in 2006 – they ended up in the trash! I’ve been actively selling alot of our things in different flea markets on Facebook and trying to distribute some of our more treasured posessions to friends and family so that we know they are being used and taken care of. We’ve also given a fair amount of stuff away or taken them to the local recycling center. All of this has actually been quite therapeutic, in a way it’s like closing a door on a given chapter in your life and making space for the new and exciting! 

But what to take with us… so far we’ve decided that we’re leaving with one suitcase, four duffel bags and a crate for Bugi which is the size of our living room! For a couple of months we’ve had a chest of drawers where we’ve been slowly collecting things that we definitely need to take, and one of the first things we unanimously decided on was a couple of cheeseslicers and a couple of sets of bedsheets! Joonas obviously wants to take a couple of guitars with him, whilst I want to take my new Moomin mug collection – neither of us are so sure about the others prioritization! Other than that we’re taking all of our clothes and shoes with us along with everything we will need for work, and all the essentials for Bugi. One advantage of having mainly Ikea furniture is that there is no need to look into shipping it half way across the world! 

Now it’s just a case of packing a little bit everyday and brutally chucking out anything we haven’t used over the past year. This is going to be fun!
