Monivärinen Suomi!

Viime vuosien epävarmuus maailmalla on näyttänyt, etteivät rauha ja vakaus ole kaikille itsestäänselvyyksiä. Jokainen meistä suomalaisista on etuoikeutettu juhlimaan ja kunnioittamaan maamme itsenäisyyttä. Samalla joulukuun kuudes päivä on kunnianosoitus kaikille itsenäisyytemme puolesta taistelleille ja sitä puolustaneille. 

The uncertainty over the past few years in the world has shown that peace and stability are not self-evident. Each of us Finns are privileged to celebrate and respect our country’s independence. At the same time, the 6th of December is a tribute to our defenders of our country and fighters. 

Olen asunut suomessa nyt 28 vuotta ”ulkomaalaisena”. Olen surullinen siitä, että vaikka olenkin asunut näin kauan suomessa, minua ei pidetä suomalaisena, ihonvärini takia. Onko aito suomalainen vaaleahiuksinen, sinisilmäinen ja kalpea ihoinen? Ei, ei minusta. Minusta suomalaisella voi olla minkä tahansa väriset hiukset, silmät ja iho. Vaikka emme kaikki näyttäisikään samalta, voimme ylpeänä juhlia suomen itsenäisyyttä. Tänään, ja vuoden jokaisena päivänä, olen kiitollinen siitä, että saan asua suomessa. Olen kiitolinen siitä, että meillä on oikeus työhön, koulutukseen ja terveydenhuoltoon. Meillä on uskonnonvapaus ja oikeus omaan poliittiseen näkemykseen. Meillä on vapaus olla oma itsemme ja ilmaista mielipiteemme. Meillä on puhdasta vettä, luontoa ja raikas ilma, jota hengittää. Meillä on vapaus liikkua ja matkustaa yhdellä maailman parhaista passeista. Meillä on kotimaa, johon voimme aina palata. Tästä ja paljosta muusta saamme olla kiitollisia ja ylpeitä, joka päivä. Kaikki nämä ovat etuoikeuksia, joita kannattaa käyttää viisaasti. 

I have lived in Finland for 28 years as a ”foreigner”. I am sad about the fact that even though I have lived so long in Finland, I’m not considered to be a Finn, because of my skin. Does a real Finnish person have blonde hair, blue eyes and a pale skin? No, not in my opinion. I think a Finn is pretty much anything they want to be. And even if we do not look the same, we can proudly celebrate Finnish independence. Today, and every day of the year, I am grateful that I get to live in Finland. I am thankful that we have the right to work, education and health care. We have religious liberty and the right to our own political views. We have the freedom to be our own self and express our opinions. We have pure water, nature and fresh air to breathe. We have the freedom to move and travel in one of the best passports in the world. We have a home country where we can always return. For this and much more, we can be thankful and proud every day. All fine privileges we should use wisely. 

Itsenäisyyspäivä on asia, jota kannattaa juhlia. Omat itsenäisyyspäivän juhlat alkoivat tänä vuonna ystävieni kanssa brunssilla. Suomalaiseen perinteeseen kuuluu sohvalla pötköttäminen ja Linnanjuhlien katselu. Me päätimme juhlistaa Suomea vähän ”railakkaammin”. Sain juhlistaa tätä upeaa päivää viiden rakkaan ystäväni kanssa, joista yksikään ei näytä ”perus” suomalaiselta. Vuoden 2017 Suomi on monivärinen, moni kansallinen ja monen näköinen. 

Independence Day is something we should celebrate. My Independence Day celebration started this year by inviting my friends for brunch. The Finnish tradition includes hanging out on the couch and watching TV all evening. But we decided to celebrate Finland a little bit more rambunctiously. I had the honor to celebrate this spectacular day with my five beloved friends, none of which appears to be ”basic” Finnish. 2017 Finland, is a multi-colored and multinational country. 

Itsenäisyyspäivän kutsuva kattaus syntyi isänmaallisin sinivalkoisin sävyin. Vieraslahjoiksi olin itse askarrellut Hamahelmistä suomenliput, joihin laitoin taakse magneetit. Näitä voidaan käyttää joulukuusen koristeena tai magneettina avatessa pallon. Kattaus oli elegantti ja houkutteleva. 

The inviting table setting of Independence Day was made in the patriotic colors blue and white. As a guest gift I made a Finnish flag from hama pearls and put it inside of a clear Christmas ornament. These can be used as a Christmas tree decoration or as a magnet. The table was elegant and attractive. 

Onnea 100-vuotiaalle itsenäiselle Suomelle ja juhlallista itsenäisyyspäivää kaikille meille suomalaisille! 
Congratulations to a 100 year old independent Finland and a solemn Independence Day for all of us Finns!
