Duran Duran: Future Past – Ympyrä sulkeutuu

”Find Durand Durand” kuuluu kulttileffa ”Barbarellan” (1968) ikimuistoiset vuorosanat. Vuonna 1978 Birminghamissa perustettu muuan uuden aallon poppoo nappasi kyseisestä scifi-leffasta hieman muunnellen nimensä ja lähti toteuttamaan tehtävää: etsi Duran Duran. Viime viikolla julkaistu Duran Duranin 15. studioalbumi ”Future Past” on mestariteos, jossa tehtävä on suoritettu. Bändi on löytänyt Duran Duranin, oman neljän vuosikymmenen ajan hiotun soundinsa kuin juhlistaen tänä vuonna ajankohtaista bändin ensimmäisen levyn 40-vuotisjuhlavuotta.
Albumi todella kokoaa yhteen vuosikymmeniä työstetyn musiikillisen aarteen, kaikki ne moninaiset musiikilliset ominaisuudet, joista Duran Duranin ominaissoundi on koostettu. Joka levyltä tuntuu olevan elementtejä mukana – Duran Duran kun on koko uransa aikana maustanut levynsä vallitsevilla trendeillä kuitenkin kuulostaen aina itseltään. Jos minulta kysyttäisiin, mistä levystä kannattaisi aloittaa Duran Duranin tuotantoon tutustuminen, vastaus olisi ”Future Past” juurikin siitä syystä, että se kiteyttää nerokkaasti koko bändin uran.
Avainasemassa tuttuun tapaan ovat myös yhteistyökumppanit. Esimerkiksi Graham Coxon (Blur-kitaristi) soluttautui Duran Duranin sävellystiimiin ja bändin mukaan Coxon sulautui ryhmään heti – kuin olisi aina ollut yksi Duraneista. Se kuuluu myös levyllä. Blurin levyt olivat aina upeita kokonaisuuksia ja niin on myös ”Future Past”. Levy toimii parhaiten kokonaisuutena. Se voisi yhtä hyvin olla bändin urasta kertovan musikaalin soundtrack, joka alkaa kokeellisella, hyvin elektronisella ja vangitsevalla raidalla ”Invisible” ja päättyy unenomaiseen outroon ”Falling”, joka toimii lopputekstinä.
Jos minulta kysyttäisiin, mistä levystä kannattaisi aloittaa Duran Duranin tuotantoon tutustuminen, vastaus olisi ”Future Past” juurikin siitä syystä, että se kiteyttää nerokkaasti koko bändin uran.
”Future Past” tarjoaa helmiä, jotka toimivat hyvin myös itsekseen. Reipas kasaripoljenta ”All of You” on bändin tiiviimpiä popsävellyksiä vuosikymmeniin avausraidan ”Invisiblen” lisäksi. ”Wing” on upea kumarrus bändin alkutaipaleen tuotannolle ja tuo mieleen niin ”Save a Prayerin” (1982) kuin ”To The Shoren” (1981). Ihan omassa sarjassaan painii myös ah niin sanoituksia myöten siirappisen kasari balladi ”Future Past”, joka on kuin huume. Pakko ottaa joka aamu ja ilta! ”Falling” on kuitenkin bändin parasta musiikillista antia koskaan. Aladdin Sane-pastissi, jossa on tietysti mukana mystistä sävyä tuomassa Aladdin Sane-pianisti Mike Garson. ”Falling” sisältää myös rakastamaani Duran Duranin Big Thing (1988) -levyn tunnelmallista sointia ”Too Late Marlenen” ja ”Do you Believe in Shamen?” tyyliin.
Oliko tämä siis tässä? Duran Duran löydetty, tehtävä suoritettu, hieno tarina saanut näyttävän lopetuksen. En usko. Duran Duran on syntynyt luomaan nahkansa uudelleen – varmasti uudet ideat ovat jo syntymässä vähintäänkin bändin mastermindin Nick Rhodesin mielen sopukoissa.

The album review – Duran Duran: Future Past

”Find Durand Durand” was once said in a cult movie ”Barbarella” (1968). A new wave band from Birmingham active since 1978 took their name from that scifi movie and took it as a challenge – the mission was to really find the Duran Duran. The 15th studio album released last week is a masterpiece. It is an album where the band really seems to complete the mission – to find the Duran Duran eg. their own sound which has been processed over the past four decades. In other words, the new album celebrates well the band’s the 40th anniversary as their first album was released for 40 years ago in 1981.
The album is a real collection of the band’s sound catalogue. Almost every album is noticed somehow if you listen carefully – and they are all different as all of the Duran Duran albums follow their time somehow, still sounding Duran Duran.
If I was asked which album should be the starter when getting familiar with the band’s music I would choose ”Future Past” as it represents the band at their best and includes all the key elements of Duran Duran’s sound landscape.
Nowadays, it is more like a tradition than an exception that DD has a quest artists in their album. This is not an exception. For instance, The Blur guitarist Graham Coxon joined the song writing team. According to the band members Graham fitted immediately into the group like he had always been one of the band members – and so it sounds like as well. Blur has made many albums which work best as a whole and ”Future Past” is exactly that kind of album. The album sounds like a musical of the band career starting from experimental and capturing electronic pop song ”Invisible” and ending with dreamy outro ”Falling” suitable for final texts.
If I was asked which album should be the starter when getting familiar with the band’s music I would choose ”Future Past” as it represents the band at their best and includes all the key elements of Duran Duran’s sound landscape.
”Future Past” includes also masterpieces which work on their own as well without the other songs. Energetic 80s stylish pop song ”All of You” is one of the most solid pop songs DD has done for decades alongside with the ”Invisible”. ”Wing” is a gorgeous bow to the band’s early production and resembles Duran classics like ”To The Shore” (1981) and ”Save a Prayer” (1982).
The title song ”Future Past” is quite its own class. It is a sweet sweet pop song with great bright 80s pop sound. It is addictive like a drug – has to be taken every night and day! Then, in the end, there is ”Falling” – the best music Duran Duran has ever written. It is Aladdin Sane -pastiche which is of course coloured by mystical piano playing by the original Aladdin Sane -pianist Mike Garson. ”Falling” reminds me of Big Thing (1988) album’s atmospheric treasures such as ”Too Late Marlene” or ”Do You Believe in Shame?” – I simply love it!
Is this the end? Duran Duran has finally found Duran Duran. The mission is completed. Has the band’s unbelieveable story come to its end with this incredible and significant album? I don’t think so! Duran Duran is born to recreate its skin. I am sure new ideas are already in making of at least in the band’s mastermind Nick Rhodes’ head.
