It is time to celebrate! It was a year ago this month (Oct) this blog was published.
To celebrate the 1st anniversary of this blog and of course to celebrate also the release of Duran Duran’s 15th album here are our top 15 Duran Duran studio albums -lists! How would your top 15 list of DD records look like? Kindly let us know! As you might see, the views may vary and it is only a good thing but there is one thing we share the same opinion on – the new album ”Future Past” is simply the best album by Duran Duran.

Laitettuani Duran Duranin studioalbumit järjestykseen, päällimmäinen oivallus oli se, että arvostan bändin kokeellisempaa tuotantoa pop-osastoa enemmän. Häntäpäähän jäi albumit, jotka eivät ole onnistuneimpia kokonaisuuksia, vaikka niissäkin on helmibiisejä joukossa kyllä. Jos minulta kysytään, jokaisessa Duran-levyssä on hyviä biisejä, niissä heikoimmissakin albumeissa.

After I had put the records into the order, the most obvious though was that I seem to appreciate most the band’s experimental albums. Albums in the lower positions are a bit weak as a whole but still containing some good songs. In my opinion, every Duran Duran albums include great songs, even the worst ones.

Albumilistani näyttää tältä. Mikäli kysyisit kuukauden päästä, voi se olla erilainen. Tällainen se on juuri nyt. Uusin levy meni heittämällä ykköseksi, sillä sitä on viikon ajan kuunneltu moneen kertaan päivän aikana. Kyllästymisen merkkejä ei ole ilmassa. Kesä menikin kuunnellessa Astronautia siis koko levyä. 2020 meni kuunnellessa Paper Godsia.

Onneksi ei Päivi saanut ideaa, että laitetaan biisit paremmuusjärjestykseen😁…millä perusteella? Tanssittavuuden? Hitaat biisit? Instrumentaalit? Siinnä olisi ollut paha rasti ihmiselle, joka ei osaa päättää…yhdeksän vanhana en osannut päättää, kenestä bändin nuorukaisesta tykkäisin eniten, kun sitä kysyttiin. Nykyään on aivan ultimate suosikki heistä. 📷🎹💻🎛🎚🎶🎵📹📼😉

My Top 15 album list looks like this. If you asked a month later it could look different but this is how it looks like now. The new album took instantly the first place. I have listened to it many times each day during the past week (it was released a week ago) and I am not yet fed up, looks promising then! The summer 2021 I spent listening to Astronaut album and the year 2020 I spent listening to Paper Gods album.

Luckily, Päivi did not get and idea of making a top 15 song list 😀 I mean, how would I have managed to pick up the best? The danceable songs? The ballads? Or should I prefer the instrumental songs? It would have been very difficult for the person like me who is bad in making decisions. As a nine-years-old I could not decide on which one of the band members would be my favourite. Nowadays I do know for sure an answer to that question, no doubt!📷🎹💻🎛🎚🎶🎵📹📼😉

Lokakuun 22. päivänä Duran Duranin 15.studio albumi ilmestyi. Olin kotona aamulla ja laitoin S:llä alkavan suoratoistopalvelun auki. Hakukenttään Future Past ja play.
Kuulokkeista alkoi tulla korviin jotain niin tuttua, mutta niin uutta. Minulla oli sekoitus päällä, joten kappaleet tulivat sattuman varaisessa järjestyksessä, ei siis siinnä järjestyksessä kuin levyllä. Täten jo viisi aiemmin kuulemaani kappaletta olivat viimeisenä.

Ensikuuntelun tein paikallaan istuen ja hiljaa. Oli vielä aamuhämäräkin. Levyn loputtua olin aivan totaalisen haltioissani. Toisinaan kappaleet heittivät suoraan sinne 80-luvun alun kellarin mehudiskoon. Toisaalta sitten tehtiin matkaa 90-luvulle ja edelleen 2000-luvulle.

Levyltä löytyy elementtejä vanhoista kappaleista, joku tietty sointu tai sanoissakin jotain. Ehkä olen kuullut väärin, mutta kappaleen Anniversary lopussa on värssy; ”All we got is this moment”. Mietin, onko se myös Simonin tavallaan muisto tai eräänlainen kunnianosoitus INXS -laulaja Michael Hutchencelle?

Levyn loputtua olin aivan totaalisen haltioissani. Toisinaan kappaleet heittivät suoraan sinne 80-luvun alun kellarin mehudiskoon.

Muutoin levy on kokonaisuutena mahtava ja todellakin juhlistaa 40-vuotista uraa hienosti. Oli hienoa, että Duranit saivat kunnian tehdä töitä ihailemansa Gieorgio Moroderin kanssa. Mikäli on katsonut haastatteluja YouTubesta niin siellä kertovat, kuinka kaikki Duranit hillitsivät itsensä suuren maestron kanssa. YouTubessa kannattaa käydä katsomassa viime aikaiset haastattelut, niitä on paljon.

Mukana on myös Blurin kitaristi Graham Coxon. Hän on kuin hyvin istuva hansikas ja se myös kuuluu levyllä. Erol Alkan on tehnyt jälleen hyvää työtä. Puhumattakaan muista levyllä olevista vierailijoista. Chai, Ivorian Doll ja Tove Lo. Eikä sovi unohtaa Mike Garsonia, David Bovien pianistia, joka ehdotti Duraneille kappaletta Five Years.

On Oct 22 the 15th studio album by Duran Duran was released. I was at the home and started to listen to the album already in the morning. I pressed ”play” and my headphones on I heard something so familiar but new. I had bundle on which means I heard the song in mixed order. The album’s five songs I had heard before were played last. During my first listening I just sat still silently. After listening the complete album I was totally captured and blown away by this record. Some of the songs threw me back to the early 80s limonade disco. Sometimes I found myself from the 90s or 00s.

Recognazible are elements from the old songs. Sometimes it is in the music, sometimes in the lyrics. If I have heard correctly, Simon sings in the end of Anniversary: ”All we got is this moment.” Somehow it resembled me of INXS singer Michael Hutchence who passed away long ago and made me thing if the line was written in honour to him.

After listening the complete album I was totally captured and blown away by this record. Some of the songs threw me back to the early 80s limonade disco.

As a whole, the album is marvellous and celebrates perfectly the 40th anniversary of the band’s career. It is great that Duran Duran was honoured to collaborate with Gieorgio Moroder who they admire. In the recent interviews, the members of the band have told how they had to
contain themselves when spending time in the studio with the maestro himself. By the way, YouTube is full of new interviews of the band. I truly recommend to check them!

As a guitarist Graham Coxon known from Blur works in the album. He fits well in the band which reflects positively to the album. Erol Alkan has done great job once again not to mention other featuring artists appearing in ”Future Past”: Chai, Ivorian Doll and Tove Lo. Of course we cannot forget Mike Garson, Bowie’s pianist who appears on the album too and who recommended Duran Duran to cover the Bowie’s classic song ”Five Years” earlier this year.
