Aawesome

Suomen ja Yhdysvaltojen kulttuuri eroaa melkein joka tavalla. Suurin osa meistä varmaan saa heti mieleen perisuomalaisen tyypin, joka on mestari bongaamaan ne vähemmän kivat asiat koffin lippis päässä ja perus amerikkalaisen, joka kiljuu aaawesome täydellä hymyllä. 

Muuttaessa tänne en tiennyt kuin muutaman tyypin. Kulttuurivaihdos ”jenkkiin”oli iso. Vaikka olenkin puhelias, otti aikansa tottua kuulemaan How are you  -kysymyksen kaikkialla. Toinen juttu, jonka sisäistämiseen käytin hetkisen oli, että vastaamalla Good, thanks. How are you? -tyyppisesti, sulautuu joukkoon. Suomessa taas kysyessä toiselta miten menee, odottaa vastauksen sisältävän pienimuotoisen kuvailun mitenkä sillä hetkellä oikeasti menee. Ennen näitä ahaa-elämyksiä, vastasin suomalaisittain ja hämennyin suuresti, kun kysyjä jatkoikin vain kävelyä oikeastaan kuulematta mitä sanoin. ”Vastaankohan nyt mitään..Oonko good vai great..Awesome on way too much..Ouh hän menikin jo ohi..” 

Oh my; hauskoja hetkiä. 

Suomessa en ollut koskaan asunut kimppakämpässä vaan tottunut melkolailla ylhäiseen omaan rauhaan, kun taas täällä olen asunut koko ajan kahden tytön kanssa. Jenkit ovat yhteisöllisempiä ja vaalivat sosiaalisuutta. Joukkuelajin harrajastana olen ehdottomasti enemmän laumaihminen ja onkin parasta, kun joku on kotona, kun palaan töistä tai koulusta.  Jälleen kerran en voi olla kun kiitollinen mun kahdesta kämppiksestä, jotka ovat tärkeä osa mun ATL familyä. Okay backtrack. Asuin ekan semesterin ilmapatjalla, ilman omaa huonetta. Kokemus:kaoottinen. Huvittava. Opettava. Tokan semesterin alussa muutettiin ja sain oman huoneen. Kokemus:ahhhh jes jes jes. Asuttiin ensimmäinen vuosi samalla alueella, joka oli sopivasti melko koulun hollilla, mutta muuta erikoisen positiivista paikassa ei juuri ollut. Viime vuoden elokuussa, eli tokan vuoden alussa yksi kämppis vaihtui,muutettiin eri alueelle lähemmäksi Atlantaa ja sain asettua asuntomme master bedroomin. Kokemus tähän asti: YAYYYY. Pidän kaupungin sykkeestä, joten oli huippua muuttaa lähemmäksi. Ilmapatjasta on tultu isoon omaan huoneeseen, joka on pelkästään ihanaa. 

Nyt on aika keskittyä Super Bowliin, me hostataan tänä vuonna juhlat. Go Panthers!!

Culture in Finland and in US differs almost every way. You can probably imagine a basic Finnish guy wearing Koff’s (a cheap beer brand) lid telling you everything that’s wrong. You can probably imagine basic american screaming aawesome with the biggest smile ever. 

I only knew few people when I moved here. Culturally the change was huge. Even though I’m outgoing it took a while to get used to the small talk, you could hear the question How are you in almost every situation. In Finland it’s more common to answer with a small story what’s happening in your life when asked what’s going on. Here, good, thanks. How about you, is enough. Though in the US the phrase is also used when just walking by people not only when seeing someone. So before realizing these small cultural things I started always telling a brief about my life. Well not quite but something like that.. I got confused when the person didn’t stay to listen but kept walking. ”Is he really asking or just kind of saying they.. Am I good or great. Awesome is way too much…”

Oh my, funny times. 

I’m living with two girls like last year. Back home I have never lived with roommies so I’ve used to have my own space but I do love the fact that someone is home when I get off from work or school.  I can only be grateful of my roommates who are important part of my ATL family.

Let’s backtrack. Through my first semester I lived in a living room on an air mattress. Experience: chaotic. Funny. Educational. After that we moved in a three-bedroom apartment and I finally got my own room. Experience: yessss. Last August I moved to a different area with one of my roommies last year and one new one. This place is closer to the city and it’s way less sketchier than where we lived at first. Experience so far: YAYY. From an air mattress to my own big bedroom –just love it. 

But. We’re hosting Super Bowl party on this year, so let’s go Panthers!!
