All You Need Is Coffee and Warm Socks

Kiitokset rakkaalle mummolle, joka jaksaa vuodesta toiseen neuloa villasukkia tumpelon tyttärentyttären jalkojen lämmikkeeksi.

There is one thing I absolutely cannot exist without…wool socks. Seriously. My circulation is crap, or more like non-existent in my toes and fingers. I’m that person you see wearing gloves in the summer if it gets cold outside.

So wool socks are a must accessory for me, especially in the winter. Without them, I’d probably have no toes anymore.

Luckily for me, I have an awesome gran, who helps me to keep my toes warm through the long winter. The woman is approaching ninety and still keeps on knitting socks and mittens. You just have to admire that.

Unfortunately, the skill did not pass on to me. Or maybe I just haven’t tried hard enough. Let’s just say, I have some minor traumas.

The last time I tried to knit was at high school and it ended with tears. I’m not even exaggerating. I was actually crying while trying to knit those damn mittens. Correction: mitten. I never finished the other one. I even have a photo to prove it. Thanks mom.

And no, I’m not showing it.

I should probably try to get over it. After all, I am now a grown woman. How hard could it be?

Yeah, right.

So to anyone who actually manages to knit these things, with pretty patterns and all, I genuinely admire your skills and patience. I sure as hell don’t have either.

And most importantly, thank you gran.

Do One Thing Every Day That Scares You

I’m starting off this week with a dare to myself.

Do one thing every day that scares you.

So today I’m going to bite the bullet, jump off the cliff…share a couple of my sketches with you. What’s the worst that could happen? Okay, I’m kind of terrified.

I’ll get over it. Most likely. Probably. Maybe.

I guess my dare might seem a little bit tame for anyone else, so a little background is in order.

For me drawing is a form of meditation, as I completely zone out when I start sketching something. I mainly draw from photographs that somehow inspire me. Usually fashion or nature. No surprises there.

However, I also tend to strive for perfection and I am, and always will be, my own worst critic. I have these ridiculous self-imposed standards that I know I’m never going to reach, be it writing, drawing or translating. This is why I rarely share any of my writings or drawings with anyone. I basically act like Gollum with the ring, hiding in the cave.

Anyway, to cut this little therapy session short, here are a couple of things that inspired me this weekend.

First a 40s power suit of sorts. I’ve always loved past fashion trends, even though I could never wear them. In my heart of hearts, I’m a jeans and T-shirt kind of girl.

Some whimsical 60s fashion. I might wear that hat. I might have that hat.

Now this. This you should definitely check out here in its full glory. It’s a military style jacket from Gucci and it is magnificent. Had I the resources, it would be hanging in my closet.

So that’s my dare for the day completed.

I survived.
