A Valentine’s Gift for You

Valentine’s day. I feel pressured to say it’s a Hallmark holiday or a marketing ploy by the teddybear industry. Or that embracing it would be like a wet fish slap on the face of the singletons. Or that I find it offensive that there has to be a set day of the year when we do nice things for each other as a couple.

F THAT!

I was single for six and a half years before I met Oli. I never really celebrated a valentine’s day and no matter how much I kept telling myself the above, I always felt a little left out. I even got stood up on a date one Valentine’s day. So last year, when I finally had a chance to- damn right I was going to mark the occasion!

After the first vindictive rush of VD had passed I became slightly more pragmatic about it. Now it’s just a nice little excuse to make Oli go the extra mile and make me Dauphinoise potatoes from scratch, even if I know he would do that for me any other day of the year as well.

I won’t be buying any roses wrapped in cheap cellophane or pink tit tat and if Oli knows me at all, he won’t be doing that either. But I will buy him a bottle of rum, to continue with the tradition I started last year. And I do have a card for him too (we have a competition- will we be able to accidentally buy the same card for each other like we did at Christmas).

Of course in Finland Valentine’s is called admirably and much less exclusively “Friends Day”. I’m sure the rest of the world will follow- think of the revenue created from buying cards for all your friends instead of just your partner!

I already got my first Valentine’s present. Carl peed on the bed this morning. Straight from the heart…I mean bladder. Perhaps it was a demonstration against the commercial nature of holidays these days.

Hyvaa Ystavanpaivaa!

When she is not peeing on beds- Carl also enjoys climbing curtains.
