”Once in a while blow your own damn mind” – Iris Apfel
En tiennyt että monet asiat joita sanon on suoraan 90-vuotiaan Iris Apfelin suusta. Olen vuosien varrella nähnyt Iris Apfelia Vogue-lehdessä tai mainoksissa mutten ikinä oikein perehtynyt kuka hän oikeasti on. Jossakin Pinterest-kansiossani oli muutamia hänen asunsa inspiraationa mutta en sen enempää tiennyt hänestä.
Valitin eilen illalla, ettei Italian Netflixissä ole mitään katsottavaa ja selailin sitä ärsyyntyneenä ennen nukkumaanmenoa kunnes ”Iris”-dokumentääri sai kiinnostukseni. Ah, Iris, miten ihana nainen!
Iris painottaa miten tärkeää on jatkaa käsitöiden tekemistä ja opettaa käsitöitä nuorille ”if nobody is there to teach them, you will just have all kinds of machine made junk”, joka on asia josta itse puhun usein. Toinen mistä tykkään paasata on siitä miten niin useasti opetetaan (etenkin koulussa) oppimaan asioita joita muut ovat päättäneet, että ovat juuri sinulle tärkeitä, opetetaan olemaan ja ajattelemaan ja miksi ei enemmän ajatella leikkimielisemmin ja panosteta mielikuvitukseen ja miten voimme luoda jotakin uutta ja erilaista. Iris myös pitää rikkaita maailman tylsimpinä pukeutujina ja puhuu siitä mikä on ”The Art of fashion” eikä ”The Glamour of Fashion”.
If you don’t learn constantly, you don’t grow and you will wither. Too many people wither on the vine. Sure, it gets a little harder as you get older, but new experiences and new challenges keep it fresh.
I don’t care what people think…I learned a long time ago…I was 19 and had a very traumatic experience….and I learned that I have to go to bed with myself at night and that I have to please myself…and as long as I don’t go out of my way to offend anybody that I love, upset my mother or my husband…I’ll do my own thing. And if the public doesn’t like it, it’s their problem, not mine.
It’s not easy to know who you are and it’s very painful and takes a lot of time and that is why a lot of people don’t want to put in the effort.
It’s not intellectual. It’s all gut.
I was never hurt by what anybody said about my clothes, because I dress to please myself. If somebody doesn’t like what I’m wearing, it’s their problem, not mine
