Joskus matkatessakin sataa

Kun kuvittelee matkailua, näkee yleensä mielessään täydellisiä auringonlaskuja, tunnelmallisia ravintolaillallisia kynttilänvalossa sekä toinen toistaan hienompia nähtävyyksiä joita tallentaa kameran linssin läpi. Ja usein matkat tarjoavat joissakin kohdin juuri näitä kaikkia. Mutta edes matkalla ei voi odottaa, että jokainen hetki olisi tällainen.

Kun jätimme Picos de Europan taaksemme tiistaiaamuna, tihutti vettä, tuuli ja oli kylmä. Päivän ohjelmassa oli lähinnä ajamista, joten emme olleet kovinkaan harmissaan tästä. Asturiasta matkattiin takaisin kohti Bilbaota. Reitin varrelle olimme valikoineet pysähdyspaikaksi San Vicente del Barqueran rantakaupungin. Päivän mittaan sateen ja vihuvan viiman lisäksi oli alkanut kerääntyä sumua. Maisemat joita odotimme näkevämme, olivat siis sumuverhon peitossa.

Sää ei näyttänyt merkkejä muutoksesta, joten päätimme ajaa suoraa tietä seuraavaan majapaikkaamme Bermeoon. Sade vihmoi ja pyyhkimet viuhtoivat hirveää vauhtia eikä ajoa helpottanut lisääntyvä työmatkaliikenne illan edetessä. Bilbaon kohdalla tie erkani pienelle vuoristotielle, joka mutkitteli tiukasti oikealle ja vasemmalle vuoroin ylös ja alas. Tie oli sateesta liukas ja ilma täynnä sumua. Ei siis auttanut ajaa kuin neljääkymppiä. Meitä kuumottivat vaikeat ajo-olosuhteet, mutta ehkä sitäkin pahempi oli paine taustapeilin näystä: perässä seurasi vaatimaton 20 auton letka, joille tie oli todennäköisesti paljon tutumpi. Pystyimme lähes kuulemaan heidän ajatuksensa hölmöistä turisteista.

Perille kuitenkin päästiin fyysisittä naarmuitta – henkiset ovat toinen asia. Bermeosta olimme varanneet pienen yksiön, johon kuului myös keittiö. Saimme siis tehtyä itse ruokaa ensimmäistä kertaa matkan aikana ja säästettyä illallisesta sekä seuraavan päivän aamiaisesta. Koska saavuimme niin myöhään, emme ehtineet tutustua juurikaan itse kaupunkiin. Se vaikutti kuitenkin sympaattiselta pieneltä satamakaupungilta. Sateen takia kameraa ei tullut otettua laukusta esiin, joten siitä ei valitettavasti löydy arkistosta kuvia.

Aamun sarastaessa sää näytti toiveistamme huolimatta yhä sateiselta. Sumu oli kuitenkin Bermeossa hälvennyt, joten toiveikkain mielin, ajoimme kohti San Juan de Gatzelugatxen-saarta. Kyseistä nähtävyyttä sekä manner-Espanjaa yhdistää erikoisennäköinen kapea silta, joka kiemurtelee eri suuntiin mennen ylöspäin 237 porrasaskelmaa. Puolen tunnin ajomatkan aikana tutuksi tulleella vuoristotiellä sumu kuitenkin tiheni. Huono onnemme jatkui jälleen, kun näköalapaikalle päästessämme emme nähneet edes merta.

Turhautuneena jatkuviin pettymyksiin, halusimme nopeasti päästä jatkamaan matkaamme kohti San Sebastiania. Kaupunki on tunnettu mahtavasta ruokakulttuuristaan, josta pääsisimme nauttimaan säällä kuin säällä. Parin tunnin ajomatkan jälkeen, kaupungin valot alkoivatkin välkkyä edessämme. Hotellimme sijaitsi vanhassa kaupungissa. Ennen kuin pääsimme levähtämään sinne, edessämme oli kuitenkin pysäköintihaasteita. Hotellilla ei ollut omaa pysäköintimahdollisuutta ja vanhan kaupungin parkkihalleissa pysäköinnistä joutui maksamaan 20€ vuorokaudelta. Lopulta parkkipaikan etsimiseen kului lähemmäs kaksi tuntia. Keskusta-alue on täynnä lukuisia yksisuuntaisia teitä ja kapeita kujia. Totesimme, että hotellin lähistöltä ei löytyisi maksutonta parkkia. Auto jätettiin noin puolen tunnin kävelymatkan päähän.

Matkailussa onkin tärkeää varautua myös haasteisiin. Aurinko ei todennäköisesti paista joka päivä ja todellisuus ei välttämättä aina vastaa Instagramin kuvia. Kohteesta toiseen matkustaminen lyhyellä aikavälillä tarkoittaa, että paikkojen näkemiseen on varattu vain rajattu hetki. Kaikki ei todennäköisesti myöskään toimi yhtä helposti kuin kotona. Esimerkiksi omatoimimatkalla ja pienellä budjetilla matkustaessa joutuu sietämään jonkin verran ylimääräistä säätämistä. Toisaalta odottamat asiat toimivat myös toiseen suuntaan. Täysin suunnittelematta saattaa päästä matkaamaan hetken ajan esimerkiksi tällaisessa seurassa.

When you think about travelling, you normally imagine the perfect sun sets, ambient restaurant dinners in candlelight and great landscapes which you are able to immortalize with your camera. Often the destinations offer just these. But even during your travels you can`t expect for every moment to be like this.

When we left Picos de Europa behind us in Tuesday morning, it was raining, cold and windy. We had decided to drive the whole day so we were not that sad about it. We traveled from Asturia back towards Bilbao. While driving, we had selected to stop in the coastal city of San Vicente del Barquera. During the day, in addition to the rain and wind, fog had been accumulating. Thus, the views we had hoped to see were covered by thick fog.

The weather did not show any signs of change, so we decided to drive straight to our next destination Bermeo. The rain drizzled and the increasing traffic did not help us. When we reached Bilbao, the road diverged to small mountain road which meandered to left and right while going up and down. The road was slippery from the rain and air full of fog. We were forced to drive only 40km/h. We were stressed by the difficult circumstances but even worse was the pressure coming from the rear-view mirror: there was around 20 cars behind us which were probably more familiar with the road. We could almost hear their thoughts about foolish tourists.

However, we reached the destination without scratches – psychological ones are another thing. From Bermeo we had booked a small studio, which had also a kitchen. Thus, we could make food for the first time of the trip and save money from the dinner and from the breakfast next day. Because we arrived so late, we did not have time to explore the city. In any case, it seemed like a sympathetic small town with a nice harbor. We did not take the camera out of its bad due to the rain, so unfortunately there is no pictures about it.

When the sun rose the next morning, the weather still looked really rainy. The fog had however cleared, so with our hopes up, we drove towards the island of San Juan de Gatzelugatxe. The attraction and mainland Spain is connected by a narrow bridge, which goes up 237 stairs in a snakelike manner. However, after an half an hour of drive, the fog became denser. As we reached our destination, our bad luck continued, as we could not see even the sea.

Frustrated to continuous disappointments, we wanted to continue our trip towards San Sebastian. The city is know from its great food culture, which we could enjoy whether it was raining or not. After driving two hours, the big city lights were in front of us. Our hotel was situated in the old town. Before we were able to rest, we encountered some parking issues. The hotel did not have possibility to park and if we would have parked in the old town, we would have needed to pay 20€/day. In the end, we tried to find parking space for two hours. The central area of the city was full of one-way streets and narrow alleys. We noted that we could not find a space near the hotel. The car was left in half an hour walking distance.

Our experience taught us that it is important to prepare for challenges while travelling. The sun doesn´t probably shine every day and the reality doesn´t always correspond to Instagram pictures. Travelling from one destination to another in a short notice means that there is just a short time limit to see the destinations. In addition, everything doesn´t always work as easily as back at home. For example, if you have independently planned your trip, there is always a small amount of extra hustle. On the other hand, it is possible that things work out fine. You might be able to travel for a while with an unexpected company.
