Eilen oli varsinainen jouluvalmistelupäivä. En tiedä oliko se ystäväni kutsu tulla leipomaan piparitaloja vai kenties reippaasti viilentynyt sää, mutta joku jouluinnostus nyt vihdoin iski myös minuun. Aloitimme aamun ystäväni Nikkin kanssa ajelemalla Deer Valleyn pienelle lentokentälle katsomaan, kun Santa Claus laskeutuu helikopterillaan tervehtimään lapsia. Lentokentän ravintola terasseineen oli täynnä iloisia vanhempia ja jännityksestä täriseviä pikkupilttejä. Osalla oli lahjalistat kourassaan 🙂 Joulupukki tapaa lapset lentokentän ravintolassa, jossa on mahdollisuus istahtaa Pukin polvelle ja saada pieni joululahja. Me emme tällä kertaa jääneet jonottamaan neljän alle kolmevuotiaan kanssa tunneiksi omaa vuoroamme, joten keskityimme nauttimaan Joulupukin ihailusta näin etäämmältä. Meidän kaksivuotiaalle tämä taisi olla jo ihan tarpeeksi jännittävää, viime vuodesta viisastuneena en väkisin ala tuputtaa pientä Pukin syliin 😉 

Yesterday was a real Christmas preparation day. I don´t know if it was my friend´s invitation to come make gingerbread houses or the freezing weather, but something has definitely woken my long-lost Christmas mood. Me and my friend Nikki started the morning by going to Deer Valley airport to see Santa Claus land with his helicopter. The restaurant and the patio were filled with happy parents and little kids about to burst with their excitement. Some even had brought their Christmas wishlists 🙂 Santa meets the kiddos in the restaurant where they can chat, sit on his lap and get a little present. This time we decided not to stand in line for hours with four kids under the age of 3, so we focused on admiring him from distance. I think this was definitely exciting enough for my 2-year-old, who was terrified of Santa a year ago 😉

Toisten katseet olivat tiiviisti nauliintuneet Pukin helikopteriin…’

Sieltä hän vihdoin tulee! Joulupukki ihasteli kovasti meidän yksivuotiasta, joten saimme mekin onneksi muutaman sekunnin Pukin huomiosta 🙂 Varmaan käymme kotimme lähellä olevassa kauppakeskuksessa uudemman kerran ottamassa kuvat Pukin kanssa.

There he comes! Santa exchanged a couple friendly words with our 1-year-old, so we got our fair share of his attention – at least for a couple seconds 🙂 We are going to see him again at the local mall to take some pictures.

Sitten olikin aika ajella Nikkin kotiin tekemään piparitaloja. Heh, näin kaiken itse alusta asti tekevänä suomalaisena ihailin sitä, että hän oli jaksanut leipoa taikinat ja paistaa osat valmiiksi koko porukalle (meitä oli siellä useampi perhe lapsineen). Tai näin oletin, kunnes selvisi, että teemmekin ”piparitalot” kaurakekseistä, jotka liimataan sokerikuorrutuksella maitopurkkien ympärille. Amerikkalaiset ovat kyllä mestareita tekemään asiat helpommin! Ja mikäs siinä, lapsille koristeluvaihe on kuitenkin se mieluisin homma. Tosin koristeista taisi kadota vähintäänkin yhtä paljon suuhun kuin piparitaloonkin… Tässä kuvanottovaiheessa osa talonkin koristeista oli kadonnut parempiin suihin. 

Then it was time to drive to Nikki´s house and make the gingerbread houses. As an ”I-make-everything-from-scratch” Finn, I was impressed with how she had made the dough and the parts for all of us (there was like five of us moms there). Or so I assumed, until I found out that we are making the ”gingerbread”houses out of graham crackers that we glue onto milk cartons with the frosting. Americans are masters of doing things the easy way! Nothing wrong with that, since the decorating is the kids´favorite part of baking anyway. Although I think at least half of the candy magically disappeared somewhere before it ended up on the houses 😉

Illalla tein sitten kauan odotetun Ikea-reissun. Tällä kertaa tiukan ostoslistan ja budjetin kanssa. Ja onneksi pitäydyin budjetissani hyvin tarkasti! Ostoslistalla oli uudet tyynynpäälliset, keittiöpyyhkeet, pari mattoa, joulukoristeita, kynttilöitä ja tuikkukuppeja, glögiä ja piparitaikinaa. (Alan näköjään oppia amerikkalaisilta: kaikkea ei tarvitse aina tehdä itse…) Olisin halunnut myös pienen pöytäkuusen, mutta yllättäen lähes kaikki oli jo loppuunmyyty. Hassua, nyt on kuitenkin vasta joulukuun kahdeksas päivä… Ja Ikea myi jo koristeita kunnon alennuksilla. Tunnen melkein olevani jo myöhässä näiden jouluvalmisteluiden kanssa! Anyway, tuli kyllä ihanan jouluinen tunnelma illalla, kun vaihdoin tyynynpäälliset talvisempiin, ripustin valot terassin oven yläpuolelle ja sytyttelin muutamat kynttilät. Pienillä asioilla saa äkkiä joulutunnelman aikaiseksi! Vielä pitää muutamat kummilasten lahjat käydä ostamassa, leipoa piparit ja laittaa ne koristeiksi purkkiin sekä ostaa hyasintti. Mmm… 

At night I made a long-waited trip to Ikea. This time with a strict budget and a list. Luckily I managed to stick with it too! I bought new pillow covers, kitchen towels, a couple rugs, decorations, candles and candleholders, glögg and gingerbread dough. (Yes, I´m starting to learn from you Americans: I don´t always need to make everything myself! :D) I also wanted a small artificial Christmas tree, but suprisingly they were all sold out. Kind of funny, it´s only the 8th… And Ikea was already selling decorations with a good discount. I almost feel like I´m late with my preparations! Anyway, we had a lovely Christmasy feel in our home after I changed the pillow covers, put up the Christmas lights and lit a couple candles. It´s the little things that create the right atmosphere. I still have to buy a couple of presents to my godchildren, bake some gingerbread and put them into these cute jars I just bought, and buy a hyacinth. Mmm…

Lopuksi pientä kuvasatoa naapuruston jouluvaloista. Nämä ovat vielä aika normaaleja jouluvaloja täällä. Ja vaikka suomalaiselle tällainen näky on aika hämmentävä, voin sanoa että nämä ovat vielä ”hyvällä maulla” tehtyjä verrattuna joidenkin himohamstraajien sirkusviritelmiin, joita myös on liikkeellä. Voi vain ihmetellä ihmisten rahanmenoa, sekä koristeiden että sähkönkulutuksen suhteen! Tämän talon omistaja piti pihallaan jonkinlaista juomatarjoilua ohiajaville ihmetteijöille, en tiedä onko jonkin sortin bisnes menossa vai kenties pyyteetöntä joulumieltä? 🙂 Vaikka olenkin näihin jo vähitellen tottunut, edelleenkin meinaa toisinaan mennä jauhot kurkkuun illalla ajellessa.

Finally, some pictures from our neighborhood lights. These are pretty normal to you Americans, but I assure you that for us minimalistic Finns, these are really baffling. I remember when a couple years ago, my parents were arguing whether they can put more than two different LED light-sets up at the same time. They were concerned what the neighbors would think, if it would be too much. They also use timers so the lights aren´t on all the time. After seeing these pictures on my Facebook page, my friends were concerned about the amount of money people spend on the decorations and the electricity. That´s Finns for ya! 🙂 The owner of this house had a hot drink stand in front of his house, I don´t know if he has some kind of business going on for all the passers-by or if he´s just showing some serious, altruistic Christmas spirit.
