Tänään on vuorossa makuuhuoneiden esittely. Olen jo melko hyvin kartalla siitä, millaisen makuuhuoneen haluan. Haasteena tulee ainoastaan olemaan tilan järkevä käyttö, sillä makuuhuoneeseen pitää mahtua sängyn lisäksi myös mieheni työnurkkaus. Jos sen jälkeen jää tilaa, mietin sitten vasta, mitä muuta makuuhuoneeseen tulee. Toimistonurkkausta esittelen seuraavassa postauksessa. Kuvassa oleva sänky on se, jonka meille aion ostaa. Pidän kovasti tuosta pehmustetusta sängynpäädystä! Ostoskorissa on myös memory foam -patja, joka toivottavasti tulee olemaan hyvä investointi meille selkävaivaisille! Laitoin kollaasiin mukaan jotain sellaista, jota meillä jo on: kuvassa näkyvä lakanasetti ja sängynpeitto ovat tälläkin hetkellä käytössä. Meillä on myös samantyyppinen torkkupeitto, jonka lämpöön kääriydyn joka ilta teekuppini kanssa. 🙂 

Today I am going to introduce our future bedroom. I have a pretty good idea of what I want. The only challenge will be to use the space wisely, since we need to fit a small office space into the bedroom. And after that, if there´s still room, I will think about what else will be in the bedroom. I will show you the office ideas later in a different post. The bed in the collage is the one I am going to buy. I just love the tufted headboard! I also have a memory foam mattress in my shopping basket, which hopefully will be a good investment for us with serious back problems! The sheets and the comforter I actually already own, they are currently in use. We also have a similar throw that I wrap myself into almost every night, with my teamug. 🙂

Kuten jo sanoin, tilaa on myös makuuhuoneessa rajatusti. Neliöt tulevat yllättävän äkkiä täyteen, vaikka tyhjänä huoneet tuntuvat kolossaalisen isoilta. Onneksi verhot ja taulut eivät vaadi kummoisesti tilaa, sillä ilman niitä makuuhuone tuntuu yllättävän karulta. Vähän harmittaa, että olin juuri teettänyt hääkuvastamme canvas-taulun, ja jouduin sitten jättämään sen Suomeen. Ei sille varmaan muillakaan ole kauheasti käyttöä… 😉 Mutta ehkä jonain päivänä joko teetän vastaavan täällä, tai sitten keksin jonkun kätevän kuljetuskeinon taululle. Jotain seinätaidetta aion kuitenkin hankkia. Olen tehnyt täällä sellaisen huomion, että amerikkalaiset eivät käytä verhoja. Se on yksi niitä pieniä asioita, joita ei ehkä ajattele tietoisesti, mutta sen huomattuaan tajuaa, kuinka alastomilta talojen ikkunat näyttävät. Itse en voisi kuvitellakaan elämää ilman verhoja: ei niinkään valon torjumiseksi vaan esteettisistä ja akustisista syistä. Toki täällä on se lattiamatto, joka vaimentaa kaikua, mutta verhot jotenkin luovat fiiliksen asuntoon. Pitkäaikainen haaveeni on ollut saada vaaterekki makuuhuoneeseen. Olisi ihanaa laittaa suosikkimekot, puserot ja miksei kengätkin esille. Hintaa tuolla rekillä ei ole nimeksikään, mutta mietin vain, kuinkahan kauan hulmuhelmani ovat turvassa ei-toivotuilta tahmatassuilta ja kenkien sovittelijoilta…

Like I said, we have limited space in the bedroom. The square feet come full faster than you´d think, even though the empty rooms sometimes seem colossal. Fortunately curtains and wall art don´t take too much space: without them the bedroom would feel surprisingly ascetic. It´s kind of a bummer that I had just developed a huge canvas picture of our wedding photo, but I had to leave it behind when we moved. I guess no one else will have use for it… 😉 But maybe someday I will either develop a similar one here, or figure out a handy way to ship it here. Nevertheless, I need some kind of wall art. One thing that I´ve noticed here is that American don´t have curtains. It´s just one of those little details that you don´t really consciously think about, but once you notice it, it´s pretty obvious how bare the windows look. I couldn´t imagine being without curtains, not so much for blocking the light but for aesthetic and acoustic reasons. Of course the carpet blocks the echoing sound a little bit, but for me it´s also something that creates the atmoshpere in the house. My longterm dream has been to own a clothing rack in my bedroom. It´d be wonderful to present all my favorite dresses, blouses and even shoes… This particular rack is practically free, but the only thing stopping me is the thought of my little rascals tearing my dresses down and trying my shoes in less than a nano-second.

No sitten. Lastenhuonedilemma! Tässä ehkä näkyy selvimmin oma ambivalenssini tämän sisustamisen suhteen.Seuraavissa kollaaseissa on pohjana samat huonekalut, jotka jo omistamme (sängyt ja lipasto). En osaa päättää, mihin suuntaan lähtisin tyylillisesti tyttöjen makuuhuoneen suhteen. Toisaalta rakastan pitsiä, röyhelöitä ja kaikkea tyttömäisen romanttista, mutta välillä ärsyynnyn kaikesta siitä vaaleanpunaisen tulvasta, jota pikkutytöille syydetään. (Anteeksi avautuminen, mutta eikö tyttöjen vaatteita saa muussa värissä kuin pinkissä tai vaaleanpunaisessa? Onneksi tämä tilanne on vähän edes korjaantunut, ja valikoimaa on enemmän.) Pidän toisaalta vähän antiikkisista, romanttisista huonekaluista, ja erityisesti lastenhuoneessa pastellivärit pääsisivät oikeuksiinsa. Siksi tekisi mieli laittaa ikkunaan ne läpikuultavat röyhelöverhot, ripustaa laatikossa odottavat nimikirjaimet seinälle ja pedata sänkyyn prinsessalakanat. Ehkä tuo harmaa vähän tasapainottaisi sitä hattaravaikutelmaa.

Well well… The kid´s bedroom dilemma! Here it´s very obvious how ambivalent I feel about decorating. Both of these collages have the same base, the furniture that we already own (the beds and the dresser). I just can´t make up my mind about the girls´ bedroom. On the other hand, I love lace, ruffles and everything girly and romantic, but sometimes I just get irritated at the pink overload that is forced on little girls. (Honestly, is it possible to get girls´ clothes in any other color but pink? Fortunately this is slowly changing and there is more selection. End of rant.) I really like antique, romantic furniture, and I think pastel colors would go so well with that, especially in the little kids room. That´s why I am really tempted to just hang those curtains with ruffles, hang the pastel pink letters on the wall and make the bed with some serious princess blankets and pillows. Maybe that grey would stabilize the cottoncandy vibe…

… Mutta toisaalta, rakastan vahvoja värejä. En koskaan ollut se tyttö, jolla oli kaikki sävy sävyyn vaaleanpunaista, tyllihameesta tiaraan. Ja mitä meidän rämäpäätyttöihimme tulee.. No, tiedättehän sen sanonnan omenista ja puista. Reippaat ja kirkkaat värit kyllä kuvastavat heidän persoonallisuuttaan paljon paremmin. Nämä tytöt ovat aika kaukana siitä kainosta kiharapääprinsessastereotypiasta! Jostain syystä tämä keltaisen ja harmaan liitto valkoisten huonekalujen kanssa suorastaan hivelee esteettistä silmääni. Turkoosi tai minttu sopisi tähän myös hyvin. Joten nyt lukijat, auttakaa! Kaipaan tosissaan rehellisiä mielipiteitä siitä, kumpi ratkaisu teidän mielestänne toimisi paremmin lastenhuoneessa. … But, on the other hand, I really love strong colors. I was never the girl who was clad in matchy-matchy pink from head-to-toe, from tutu to tiara. And when it comes to my daughters… Well you know what they say about apples and trees… I think that bold colors suit their personalities much better. These girls are far from the shy, curly-haired princess stereotype. For some reason, this yellow-grey -combo accompanied by white furniture just really pleases my eye. Turquoise or mint would go well with these too. So now, my dear readers, help me! I would really appreciate your honest opinion about which option you think would work better in the kids´ room. Iloisia uutisia! Löysimme vihdoin kriteeriemme mukaisen asunnon, johon pääsemme muuttamaan muutaman viikon kuluttua. On ollut yllättävän hankalaa löytää asuntoa, joka olisi lähellekään odotuksiamme vastaava. Halusimme ensimmäisessä kerroksessa sijaitsevan asunnon, jossa olisi mielellään puu- ja/tai laattalattiat, eikä sitä ainaista kokolattiamattoa. (Täällä on käytännössä mahdotonta löytää asuntoa, jossa kokolattiamattoa ei olisi, ellei sitä halua itse remontoida. Ja me emme halua, ennen kuin meillä on omistusasunto.) Itselleni myös kettiön yleiskunto, pohjaratkaisu ja jopa kaappien väri on aika ratkaiseva. Hassua, kun Suomessa on tottunut pitämään tiettyjä asioita itsentäänselvyyksinä, ja täällä ne eivät yllättäen olekaan sitä. Valkoiset seinät ja keittiö ovat Suomessa lähes oletusarvo, mutta täällä niitä ei löydä mistään. Täällä myös alueella on ihan erilailla merkitystä: Suomessa asuimme muka pahamaineisella alueella, joka osoittautui paljon mainettaan perheystävällisemmäksi. Täällä sen sijaan kannattaa todellakin vältellä tiettyjä alueita, mikä taas tarkoittaa sitä, että sijainnista joutuu todellakin maksamaan. Turhauttavaa oli se, että lähes kaikki vähänkään modernimmat ja remontoidut asunnot olivat juuri niillä pahamaineisilla alueilla.

Emmimme pitkään kahden ja kolmen makuuhuoneen asuntojen välillä, kunnes sitten päädyimme siihen, että kaksi makuuhuonetta riittää meidän perheellemme toistaiseksi vallan mainiosti. Vuokrat nimittäin pomppaavat näiden kahden asuntotyypin välillä huomattavan paljon ylöspäin. Löysimme sopivan, katutasossa sijaitsevan  noin 90-neliöisen asunnon hyvältä alueelta: asunnossa on tilavat makuuhuoneet vaatehuoneineen, kaksi kylpyhuonetta, olohuone ja keittiö sekä terassi. Lattia on pitkälti laattaa, ainoastaan makuuhuoneissa on lattiamatot. Keittiö on siisti ja suorastaan luksusluokkaa moniin muihin verrattuna: siihen kuuluu integroidut, stainless steel -kodinkoneet sekä graniittiset tasot. Asuntoon kuuluu myös automaationa pesukone ja kuivausrumpu. Meidän tapauksessamme on erityisen mukavaa, että kodinkoneet kuuluvat vuokraan.

Arvatakin saattaa, että tämä tuleva muutto on nyt viimeistään herätellyt sen uinuvan sisustajan minussa… Olen pitkin syksyä katsellut mieleisiäni kalusteita, ja nyt olen tehnyt muutamia inspiraatiokollaaseja, joista ehkä vähän selviää, mitä olen hakemassa. Minulla ei todellakaan ole yhtä selkeää tyyliä, kuten varmasti tulette huomaamaan. En koskaan ole pitänyt itseäni Skandinaavisen minimalistisena sisustajana, mutta minua silti miellyttävät selkeät linjat ja neutraalit värit huonekaluissa. Tekstiileillä sen sijaan tykkään leikitellä, enkä emmi käyttää värejä. Täällä asuessa olen kuitenkin huomannut, että suomalainen sisustustyyli alkaa selkeästi nostaa päätään… 🙂

Here´s a happy announcement! We finally found an apartment that matched our criteria, and we will move within a couple of weeks. It has been surprisingly hard to find a place that would meet our expectations. We wanted a first floor apartment with hardwood or tile floor, not the ancient, disgusting carpet. (Here is seems impossible to find a place without carpet, unless you want to renovate it. And we don´t, until we actually own a place.) For me, the kitchen is crucial: the general condition, countertop materials, even the color of the cabinets. It´s kind of funny to notice what kind of things I have taken granted in Finland. For example, white walls and cabinets are more of a rule than an exception. Here the location matters on a whole different level. In Finland, we supposedly lived in a ”bad” area, that in fact was one of the most child-friendly neighborhoods. But here you definitely want to avoid certain areas, which means that you end up paying for a better location. I have been extremely frustrated that almost all of my favorite apartments (the modern, renovated ones with white kitchens and hardwood floors) were in those ghetto areas!

For a long time, we were debating between a 2-bedroom and a 3-bedroom, but in the end we decided that a 2-bedroom would be big enough for our family. The fact that the rent jumps significantly between these two apartment sizes, obviously affected our decision as well. In the end, we managed to find a nice, first floor apartment with approximately 980 squarefeet in a good location. It has two bedrooms with spacious walk-in-closets, a living room, kitchen and a patio. The flooring is mostly tile, only the bedrooms are carpeted. The kitchen is almost luxurious compared to many other options we had: it has integrated stainless steel appliances and granite countertops. I love the fact that here all kitchen appliances (such as a microwave and a dishwasher) and washing machine & dryer are included – that´s almost never the case in Finnish rentals.

You might guess that this upcoming move has woken the sleepy interior designer in me…Throughout the fall, I have looked for furniture, and now I am about to show you guys some inspiration collages, that will give you an idea of what I´m after. I don´t really have a distinct style, as you will notice. I have never considered myself a typical, Scandinavian minimalist, but I do value sleek design and neutral colors in furniture. However, I like to play with color by using different textiles, such as pillows, curtains and rugs. While living here, I have definitely noticed that the Finnish preferences are beginning to show… 🙂

Keittiön suhteen minulla on melko selvät sävelet. Jo Suomessa haaveilin Ikean INGOLF -tuoleista ja INGATORP -pöydästä, ja oli hilkulla etten niitä jo ostanut. Vaikka Ikeaa aina morkataan, niin sieltä löytyy mielestäni ihan hyvälaatuisia huonekaluja, kunhan ei valitse sitä kaikkein halvinta (ja heppoisinta) vaihtoehtoa. Tämä ruokaryhmä tuntuu todella jämäkältä, ja uskon sen kestävän hyvin käytössä. Ostin 2-vuotiaallemme jo saman sarjan juniorituolin, joka on ainakin nyt tämän kuluneen puoli vuotta kestänyt loistavasti, ja se on ollut todella helppo siivota sotkuista. Kollaasin oikeassa yläkulmassa olevan keittiöpyyhkeen ostin väriläiskäksi keittiöön Crate&Barrel -nimisestä liikkeestä, jonka tarjonta kyllä viihdyttää Pohjoismaista tulevan silmää. Heillä on myynnissä mm. Marimekkoa! Kollaasin keskellä oleva pöytäliina sopii hyvin tähän maalaisromanttiseen tunnelmaan.

My plans are pretty clear when it comes to kitchen. I have dreamed of this dining set from Ikea for years now, and I was pretty close to buying it two years ago. Even though people always bash on Ikea, I think they have decent furniture if you just know not to pick the cheapest (and the flimsiest) option. This dining set seems to be pretty sturdy and I believe it will last us a long time. I actually bought the same series Junior chair for our 2-year-old, and it has lasted well these past 6 months, and it´s also very easy to keep clean. In the top right corner is the cute Crate&Barrel kitchen towel that I bought for inspiration and for color. Crate&Barrel definitely pleases my Scandinavian eye: they even sell Marimekko products online! The table cloth and cushions are from H&M Home, and I think they suit this French countrystyle very well.

Tämän kollaasin sisältö oli itsellenikin pieni yllätys, koska en ole koskaan erityisemmin pitänyt graafisista kuoseista tai modernista sisustuksesta. Nyt näiden muhkeiden, tummanruskeiden nahkasohvien ja barokkityylisten elementtien keskeltä alkaa näyttää siltä, että haluan omaan kotiini vaaleita sävyjä ja selkeää harmoniaa. Kuka olisi uskonut! Ja juu, tuolla on se ”bloggaajamatto”, johon itsekin olen usein törmännyt blogimaailmassa. Vielä yritän arpoa tuon Vallilan Bulevardi -verhon kanssa, saisikohan sitä tilattua tänne… Olohuoneessamme tulee olemaan aika rajatusti tilaa, joten en aio täyttää sitä massiivisilla sohvaryhmillä. Katsotaan, saanko sohvapöydän mahtumaan tilaan jotenkin järkevästi (senkin suhteen on muutama varteenotettava vaihtoehto kiikarissa). Sohvan on ehdottomasti oltava vuodesohva, jotta Suomen-vieraat saadaan jonnekin majoitettua.. 😉

The contents of this collage were a bit of a surprise even for me: I have never really liked graphic prints or modern interior. But now, after being surrounded by huge, puffy, dark brown leather couches and Baroque-style elements, I definitely want to fill my home with light colors and sleek design to create that airy feeling and harmony. Who would have thought! And yes, there´s the famous ”blogger rug” which I have often spotted in the Scandinavian blogosphere. I am still debating whether I should try order that Vallila curtain, I don´t know if they ship overseas… Our living room is going to have limited space, so I don´t plan to stuff it full with massive loveseats and sectionals. Let´s see if I can even comfortably fit a coffee table there (I do have a couple of options though)… But one thing is for certain, and that is our couch. It has to be a bed couch so that I can accomodate my Finnish guests… 😉

Viimeisimpänä muttei vähäisimpänä: eteinen. Täällä ikuisen kesän osavaltiossa ei paljon takkeja käytetä, ja kenkiä pidetään sisälläkin jalassa, joten eteissäilytys on aina (varsinkin meille suomalaisille) varsinainen päänvaiva. Käytännössä ulko-ovelta astutaan lähes suoraan olohuoneeseen, eikä varsinaista eteistilaa ole monessakaan asunnossa. Ja jos sellainen tila löytyy, niin siinä ei ole mitään paikkaa kengille, takeille tai millekään säilytysratkaisulle. Onneksi meidän eteisestämme löytyy jo kaappi, johon saa ripustettua vaatteita. Kenkäteline on sen sijaan pakko hommata, sillä meidän talossamme ei kuljeta kengät jalassa. Ei vaikka presidentti tulisi vierailulle. Eteistilaan saattaisi hyvinkin mahtua tuollainen Ikean kapea kenkäkaappi, ja haaveilen myös avorekistä, mutta katsotaan löytyykö sille paikkaa. (Lasten kanssa se ei kyllä ole mikään käytännöllisin ratkaisu…) Joku taulu ja peilinaulakko eteiseen varmasti tulee. Lasten kanssa olisi myös kätevää saada mahdutettua eteiseen penkki, jotta kengännauhojen sitominen sujuisi sutjakkaammin.

Last but not least: hallway. Here in the Sunshine state we don´t really wear jackets, and to my utter dismay, people wear shoes inside. Therefore, there are no proper entryways here, let alone closets where one could put their outerwear. And this drives us Finns crazy. Practically, people step straight into your living room once they open the door. Fortunately, we have an entryway with a built-in closet, so we can at least hang our jackets in there. However, we are going to have to buy a shoe cabinet, because no one will wear shoes in our home. Not even the president, if he ever decides to stop by on his way to the office. So, this IKEA cabinet is narrow enough to fit in our entry. I also dream of an open rack like the one in the left corner, but we´ll see if we actually have space for it. (Probably not the most practical thing with kids anyway.) But we will for sure have some kind of art and a mirror in the entry. It would be nice to have a bench to tie the kids´ shoelaces as well…
